Friendship with the World

"You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God." --James 4:4

I've written before about those who proclaim that there is a "prophetic voice of the world," or as another preacher said, "God's witness to us in the culture." Such people want the Church of God to be open to supporting rebellion to the Bible, making it a lesser voice than their own subjective experiences.

They silence teaching on repentance and holiness and seek to get rid of anything which makes a worldly person feel uncomfortable in our midst. Open doors and hearts, yes, but when they come in, what all should find is a congregation lifting God up and faithfully speaking His truth; calling the lost to the home they need, rather than seeking to comfort men in their fallen state.

"But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you."    --1 Corinthians 14:24-26

Church is not all about seekers, however. It is the seat of corporate worship, fellowship, and engaging with the teaching of the apostles (see Acts 2:42), which was built on understanding the Gospel and the Old Testament. In a Biblically illiterate society, believers and seeker alike need good expositional preaching to understand the whole witness of scripture.

Will engagement in the teaching of sound doctrine push people away from the church? The passage above indicates that it will not, and the history of the church has affirmed time and again that those who are a faithful witness don't lack for an audience.

We need to stop fearing other people, their criticism and rejection. Instead we need to be faithful in what we teach, what we preach, and how we live. That will cost us friendship with the world, but it will make us friends of God and His children; past, present and future.

The Unintended Post

I didn’t mean to open a new post just now, but in exploring the new bells and whistles on blogger, I pushed a red circle and here I am. Whenever possible, I am a homebody. The Covid 19 lockdowns made it more possible for me to chose to stay home without looking weird, and it’s hard to give up. The last month has really changed my online life. It has revealed the darkness of all Salem Communications owned sites, as well as Whatfinger, Liberty Daily, Citizen Free Press and other sites I used to frequent for news from a non full-left slant. Instead they have a mostly pro-Putin / antiUkraine slant! Even Glenn Beck has gotten askew on his facts regarding Ukraine in 2014. Rather than accepting the public record of a legal quorum of the parliament impeaching Yanukovich after he abandoned his office and nation, Glenn calls the Revolution of Dignity a “coup.”  However, he’s not as bad as the others and certainly does not exhibit a heart of cruel indifference to the present situation. He see...

Brace for Impact

8/14/2011  As I read the headlines this morning that foretell a likely downgrade of America's credit rating, I could see that image of the cartoon people from airline instruction cards, bracing themselves for impact. We all need to prepare for a bumpy, economic, emergency landing. So, what do we do? I've lived through more than one economic downturn in my life, the most extreme of which were overseas. I had the cushion of hard currency as an exchange student and as an international worker; the people around me had the cushion of having prepared, put by (horded), and using their means frugally. Let me say here that I really don't expect some post-apocalyptic nightmare scenario to materialize with people starving in their basements, having eaten their family pets, and killing their neighbors over stale croutons. What I do expect we could see is more unemployment, more uncertainty, inflation and possibly shortages of foods and durable goods. It is possible we could see...

The Red Heifer and Julian of Norwich

Today I read Numbers chapter 19 and was thoroughly puzzled by the Ordinance of the Red Heifer. I was trying to see the prefiguring of Christ in it and really couldn't make it out. Later in the evening we watched an episode of Call the Midwife in which one character quoted Julian of Norwich, "If you ask what God meant by this, He meant love." I thought about how that fit, and  while it was superficially satisfying, it wasn't quite enough answer for my mind. As I perused some of the quotes from the Revelation of Divine Love, this one seemed to be the answer I had hoped for: “...we need to fall, and we need to be aware of it; for if we did not fall, we should not know how weak and wretched we are of ourselves, nor should we know our Maker's marvelous love so fully...”  ―  Julian of Norwich ,  Revelations of Divine Love Needing this ordinance and the other rituals of purification, atonement, and redemption showed the Israelites how utterly dependent we are o...
